Taping for Digital Pad Wounds in Dogs

A wound on a paw pad can be difficult to bandage and keep clean, especially since dogs continue to walk on it. Kinesiology tape offers a flexible way to protect the area, keep an antibiotic ointment or dressing in place, and shield the wound from dirt while it heals.

Step-by-step application

1. Clean the wound and apply any prescribed ointment or dressing, such as a small piece of gauze with antibiotic ointment, directly over the wound.
   
2. Cover the pad with a piece of tape sized to hold the dressing in place without restricting the toes.
   
3. Extend the tape slightly up the leg if extra security is needed, to help keep the whole dressing in place during normal movement.
   

Important precautions

• Have any significant or non-healing paw wound assessed by a veterinarian – taping manages comfort and protection but does not replace wound care advice.
• Change the tape and dressing regularly, following your veterinarian’s guidance on wound care.
• Check that the tape is not applied too tightly around the toes or pad, which could restrict circulation.
• Watch for signs of infection (increasing redness, swelling, odour or discharge) and seek veterinary advice if these occur.
